I’m really thinking about getting into them but one thing has started to really bother me.

Kinja'd!!!

A lot of them have exhaust pipes that either exit directly at the front or side pipes that start at the front. They are all rear engined though.... I know they are just trying to emulate their favorite pre-war cars but it just bothers me.

The other thing that’s bothering me is I wonder if I would really like it compared to autocrossing a cheap beater.

I want one. That’s what I think of them.

Why is this not the premier grassroots motorsports series? Spec lawnmower engine, but leave everything else up to the builder!

Well they only make like 5 hp with 200cc motor. I think I read top speed is 40 mph.

It’s definitely enticing but I’m kind of torn trying to decide if I would have more fun with, this or a beater miata.

This weighs less and will have less grip. Slower car fast.

Do you like tinkering or do you like racing more, that’ll answer your question of which is best.

K20 swap. All the you’re-gonna-die adrenaline rush thrills of driving a Viper without the pricetag!

True but I’ve messed myself up on scooters that topped out at 35. Maybe I’m just getting old.

Looks like a fun sport. To answer your question about the “side pipes”, this comes from the specifications page:

The main structure of our cars is the monococque plywood box which forms the core structure. This is strong and light. The side framerails are rectangular steel tubing and are primarily for locating the axles fore-and-aft. The “exhaust pipes” on all of the cars are a necessary part of the structure; they add torsional stiffness to the box structure around the cockpit.

Of course, in the picture you posted the side pipes don’t run down the length of the body, they’re just little straight headers on the front cowl. It’s mostly aesthetics. You can surely exclude this element if you like; less material = less weight = more zoom.

This is really tempting to me, as my primary training/talent is in construction and wood working. Although I would not do the fake front exhaust thing.

Never seen these things before! I used to have a go-kart that I was hot-rodding long before I had a car. If you keep the weight down, 5-10hp can get you going plenty fast.

I was able to powerslide it once I rebuilt the motor, removed the govenor, added a heavy duty connecting rod and a better carb. Unfortunately it didn’t have a roll bar and I rolled and broke my arm when I was in high school

You’d think with a name like “cyclekarts” they’d be pedal-powered.
